In middle and high school, my schools primarily used Google. I did some early college credit that required MS applications, but it was in very small doses compared to the amount I used Google services. When coming to college this Fall, I was still very new to all MS applications and had to adapt to them in order to do my assignments. I prefer Google Docs due to the autosave feature and I do think it is more user friendly, but I am more used to MS Word at this point. There was definitely a learning curve at first though!
The ISTE Standard that is most meaningful to me is 2.1 Learner. I believe that there is always more to learn, even when you are the teacher. Working with others and doing research on new things you can utilize in your classroom is very crucial if you want to be a good teacher. I love how it stated how important "staying current" with research is. People can learn something early on and continue to use that practice as if they are experts, but education, especially when it comes to technology, is always advancing day to day.
I definitely agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth. I would classify a "digital native" as children that have never known a world without some form of technology present in their household, school, or community. This definitely impacts their attention span and allows them to rely on technology, which is not present in older generations that were not brought up with technology everywhere (digital immigrants). Digital immigrants are able to function properly without a technology source because they have lived in a time where it was not a constant resource. When it comes to my classroom, I want to make sure to use technology to allow digital natives to learn in their best learning style, but I do not want to overdo it and lead them to have a decreased attention span or any other negative side effects. They will likely be better with technology than I am because they are simply more used to the new services since they do not know of a life without them.
